Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg is looking to fund nearly 800 shelter beds for the homeless. Several sites are under consideration including the Florin light rail station parking lot and Cal Expo.
Steinberg says after two years, each shelter would cost about 18-million-dollars a year to operate. Negotiations continue, and the Sacramento Bee also reports that the mayor's 40-million-dollar proposal would fund the beds for the next two years. However, not every city council member has agreed that spending that much money on a shelter over the long-term is a good idea.
Governor Gavin Newsom during his State of the State address this week said he will establish a new commission on homelessness and housing to address the problem of homelessness, and he appointed Steinberg to head that commission.
