Tracy Lawrence Gives Advice To Aspiring Artists

Tracy Lawrence has been in the music business for 30 years. It would be an understatement to say, "he knows a thing or two."

In a recent interview with Cody Alan, the chart-topping country singer shared some critical advice for aspiring artists.

"I try and choose my words very carefully," says the "Alibis" singer. "I think that there is a balance here. I was fortunate early on to really have a clear understanding of who I was as an artist and what worked for me."

"I had a label that tried to force a lot of things on me that John Michael [Montgomery] cut. I mean, they tried to force "I Swear" on me, and those things and they were massive, massive records, and I am sure that I would have had massive double, triple, platinum albums off of them. But that wasn't me. That wasn't what I wanted to do."

"I liked the heartbreak, the crying in your beer, more traditional stuff," says Tracy. "I knew where I wanted to go. I felt like I would let myself down if I didn't record things that I could sink my teeth into. That being said, when people ask me, "What's the best advice you can give me?"

"When you do get to a place, and you've got the talent, and you do get an opportunity to have a career, you might have to bend a little bit until you get the leverage, but try your hardest to record things that you are passionate about," says the "Find Out Who Your Friends Are" singer.

"Don't let them force you to cut things that you really don't like, because if you are successful with them, you are going to wake up one day and hate singing them every time you walk out on stage," Tracy says earnestly. "I know people, I have peers that feel that way, and really that makes for a not very enjoyable later stage of your life."

"It might not seem like an important early on but stick to your guns," encourages the country legend. "You might have to give a little bit to get a little bit, but as you grow, try and record things that you love."
