California AG Goes To Court To Stop Trump Asylum Rule

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra went to court in San Francisco on Thursday to argue against a Trump administration rule preventing people who have not entered the U.S. at a port of entry from seeking asylum.

Becerra made his arguments as part of an amicus brief filing in support of a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union.

"The federal government has a legal obligation to hear the petitions of those who are fleeing violence or persecution and seeking asylum in this country," Becerra told the justices of the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. "The Trump Administration's attempts to circumvent the law endanger the health and safety of thousands. Alongside our partners across the nation, we will continue to fight to preserve the rule of law and the rights of asylum-seekers in our country."
