California Capital Airshow Offers Overhead Thrills

The California Capital Airshow kicks off Sept. 21 and will include several decades of aircraft on display and pilots performing aerial aerobatics at Mather Airport throughout the weekend.

The show begins with the Airshow After Dark, which features the U.S. Army Golden Knight skydiving team, an aerial showcase of the CF-18 Hornet, plenty of food, music and a nighttime fireworks show.

Headlining the event is the U.S. Air Force Thunderbird Squadron on both Saturday and Sunday.

Also taking part in the show is the F-35 Lightning II, the newest U.S. Air Force fighter jet. Pilot Major Tony "Bolo" Zelasko says the F-35 is a state-of-the-art aircraft.

"From what we've experienced on the road at other shows, it definitely has some 'wow' factor and people are surprised what it can do," Zelasko says.

The airshow will also celebrate the 100-year anniversary of Mather Airport. A museum featuring photographs and facts about the history of the airport will also be on display.
